Growing For Good
Started in 2018 by senior Hannah Berry and junior Lillie Johnston, Growing For Good was created as a way to not only connect students and teach them about the magic of gardening but also to donate said plants for the betterment of the community. Plants grown in the lower and upper greenhouses at Byrd High School are donated to Common Ground, a safe place for all people to grow. Growing For Good is also branching out into hydroponics, which are located in the center of Byrd. With a grant from the Bayer Fund, this system is intended to feed Byrd and eventually the entire district. Growing For Good is a club where members become educated on the wonders of plants and how they can improve everyday life.

Hydroponics

Hydroponics is a process of growing plants without soil and with water and nutrients. These plants grow 30-50% faster than those grown traditionally because of their distance to the nutrients they need. Growing For Good received a $15,000 grant from the BayerFund for a large table, seed table, and buckets for an assortment of plants. The plants, specifically lettuce and tomatoes, are going to be sold back to the student population and eventually the district. Growing for Good will manage these plants and a hydroponics class will be in place for the 2021-2022 school year.
